There’s a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse looming that culminates tomorrow at 2:09 pm ET!
Before you
take that Moon Bath, consider what the ancients thought about eclipses.
The Maya
viewed eclipses as dangerous signs, often viewing them as indications of
conflict or the death of the Sun god. They believed that rituals such as
bloodletting, drumming, and dancing were necessary to restore balance and
awaken the Sun from its cosmic struggle against a jaguar or monster. During
eclipses, the Maya would close their windows and stay indoors.
Similarly,
many Hindu temples close during solar or lunar eclipses due to ancient beliefs
that these events are inauspicious. It is thought that an eclipse disrupts the
natural order and brings an influx of negative energies, potentially harming
the sanctity of the sacred space and its deities. Temples typically reopen
after the eclipse, followed by a traditional purification ritual.
